THE NEWS   THE MUSIC   THE BAND   THE GIGS   THE REST

It's all very fractal really. There are no real beginnings, nor endings neither. One place that could, for the sake of a good story, be called a beginning was a summer. It was a summer set back in the heady days of the year 2000. The new millenium was settling in with a minimum of gloom and practically no doom. There was a general feeling of optimism - this was a fresh clean time, and was sure to go much better than the last. People all over Ireland were breathing a collective sigh of, well, perhaps not relief, but a small sigh anyway, as they settled in for another thousand years.

In the midst of all of this a meeting occurred in North Dublin. Two people, known only as Kathryn and Daniel sat down to play guitar. Well, to be absolutely truthful, there was more guitar playing from Daniel than Kathryn. But with much persuasion she did indeed consent to perform a song. The details of what was played are lost in the dappled shadows of history, but over the course of the session, the youthful Daniel suggested those doom-laden words - that Kathryn should have her own band. This could be seen as a beginning. Of sorts.

Perhaps a little background on our quartet of troubadors might be in order at this point:

Kathryn was actually already in a band, unnamed, with other musical folk, including Shane, who would later join the band - if only for a while. It took time, but the idea of a band of her own and writing songs and singing on her own terms quickly took root in her mind.

Daniel was also in a band. He was the lead singer/songwriter of the band Coyote Blue. He remained with them until early 2001, when he decided a break was in order. A return to his original instrument, the bass (the viola?!), seemed like a plan.

David, at the time of this meeting of ideas, was actually in the same building on that fateful night. He had recently decided to learn what all the fuss was about with the whole 'guitar' idea. Earlier in the week, he'd brought Kathryn, an old friend of his, with him to purchase one of his very own.

Hugh's whereabouts at this time remain somewhat of a mystery. It is rumored that he was, at that very instant, playing guitar in his house in Maynooth, wondering if he couldn't get a beat from something other than the rythmic tapping of his foot.

It was a while before the thoughts provoked that night bore musical fruit. But by the time that winter came around, it found Kathryn and Daniel practicing, if irregularly, a few of the songs that are still played by the band today. All that was needed to complete the first line-up was a drummer, and through contacts in college, Kathryn was introduced to the inimitable Gioval. Describing himself on several occasions as 'a musical slut', Gioval completed the circuit that was Someday. After some regular practices and experimental recordings with the latest technology (a "tape-recorder", no less!), it wasn't long before the trio were making plans for their debut.

Trying to kick off their musical voyage with something a little 'different', they managed to arrange not one, but two gigs on the same night in different parts of Dublin. It was a crazy night and exhausting but they enjoyed it. Despite their energetic debut, life was not straightforward for Someday from then on. Exams beckoned, and Gioval had a previous committment to spend the summer in the States. Managing to get in an acoustic gig before the summer sent them on their separate ways, the music died to whisper, but never faded completely.

After the heat of the summer, the trio were reunited. Unfortunately, due to increasing pressure at college, Gioval had to part ways with Someday. Farewells, hugs and manly handshakes were exchanged and the trio carried was down to two. Undismayed, they continued on, and, armed with some new material they considered ideas for the next incarnation. Old friends were there in the time of need and so David and Shane, who was - and is to this day - the lead singer and guitarist of the Laois-based band Resonance, joined up to make the current line-up complete. Playing an acoustic gig in the Ha'penny Inn as a warm-up, Someday were readying themselves to unleash their music on the world. Ironically, it was for the very same reasons as Gioval that Shane was to leave Someday...

The next chapter of Someday's history, "How a long walk and five days in blankets can make you friends", will follow after this short musical interlude.
